Often referred to as “The Greatest Shoal on Earth,” the annual Sardine Run occurs between May and July. Billions of silver sardines migrate northward from the cold waters of the Cape to the warmer waters of KZN.
This massive movement triggers an incredible marine feeding frenzy, drawing thousands of dolphins, sharks, Cape gannets, and game fish close to the shoreline. It is a world-renowned spectacle that happens right on our doorstep.
Between June and November, the KZN South Coast serves as a vital highway for thousands of Humpback whales. These ocean giants migrate from their icy Antarctic feeding grounds to the warmer waters of Mozambique to mate and give birth.
Pods of whales can easily be spotted from the shore breaching, blowing, and tail-slapping as they navigate their way along our coastline.
Away from the ocean, the coastal landscape undergoes its own stunning transformation. Winter is the peak flowering season for the region’s indigenous Aloe ferox and Aloe arborescens.
Renishaw Hills and the surrounding conservation areas are currently turning into vibrant bursts of orange, red, and gold as these magnificent aloes begin to bloom, attracting an array of colourful sunbirds to the estate.
