With the recent revamp of our iconic steel bridge, we thought it was time to take a closer look at the story behind it. While the bridge may be a familiar part of the journey into the Lifestyle Estate, its history stretches back decades.
From its beginnings as a farm road to the thoughtful design inspired by the surrounding wetland below, there’s more to this structure than meets the eye.
From Farm Road to Renishaw Hills
Let’s rewind to 1979. Long before Renishaw Hills welcomed residents, this was simply a farm road, used by horses and tractors.
When the Renishaw office was built, the road as we know it began to take shape. The arrival of the N2 highway brought another major change, with a one-way bridge constructed over the freeway soon afterwards.
The 2015 Transformation
When planning for Renishaw Hills Lifestyle Estate began in 2015, the road underwent a significant transformation.
It was tarred, solar streetlights were installed, and a pedestrian walkway was added. These practical additions helped turn an old farm road into the iconic entrance that residents know and love today.
An Avenue of Coral Trees With a Story to Tell
Look closely at the trees lining the road, and you’ll find another lovely connection to the past.
Some of the Common Coral Trees are remnants of the original dirt road, while others have grown from cuttings taken from those trees. Together, they form a living link between the area’s agricultural history and the current landscape.
When they flower in late winter, the road becomes framed by beautiful orange flowers.
The Architects Behind the Steel Bridge
The steel bridge itself was designed by ZAARC Architects, with the surrounding landscape playing an important role in its design.
Rather than creating a structure that feels separate from its surroundings, the architects drew inspiration from the wetland below. Its sweeping steel forms echo the reeds and foliage rising from the water.
A Bridge Inspired by a Restored Landscape
The wetland beneath the bridge has its own remarkable history. The land spent more than a century under sugarcane before being restored to its natural state.
Today, the bridge reflects that transformation, connecting the developed estate with the landscape that existed here many years ago.
