Winter in KwaZulu-Natal is unlike any other province in South Africa. While you might picture dry landscapes and bare trees, the colder months can be surprisingly colourful here for property on the South Coast.
This is especially true for Renishaw Hills Lifestyle Estate. Our sprawling property on the South Coast has been landscaped by none other than Elsa Pooley – an esteemed local botanist whose passion for indigenous plants is evident throughout the estate.
In this article, we take you for a guided stroll through our vibrant coastal gardens, highlighting what’s in bloom and the importance of incorporating native species… no matter the season.
How the Winter Months Bring South Coast Gardens to Life
Winter might bring cooler temperatures and less rainfall to KZN, but these conditions are actually ideal for many of the region’s indigenous succulents.
Aloes, kalanchoes, and other hardy plants are adapted to seasonal changes and often flower during the cooler, drier months.
This gives the Renishaw Hills gardens a distinctive winter colour palette, with bright blooms contrasting against silver, grey and deep red foliage.
A Garden Designed by Elsa Pooley
The green spaces at Renishaw Hills were landscaped by botanist and author Elsa Pooley, whose expertise in indigenous plants is seen around every corner.
The result? Eye-catching natural areas that celebrate the raw character of KZN’s South Coast.
Residents are treated to splashes of seasonal colour, thoughtful garden layouts, and plenty of space to unwind in nature.
Meet the Aloes

Imagine being greeted by these gorgeous aloes on chilly winter mornings.
KwaZulu-Natal is home to several aloe species, all beautiful in their own way. Here’s what you can expect from them during mid-winter:
- Aloe vanbalenii: Its flowers are almost finished, but the plant’s distinctive deep pinkish-red leaves remain a striking feature of the winter garden.
- Aloe chabaudii: Now in full flower, this aloe is one of the highlights of the July and August gardens.
- Aloe candelabrum: Just beginning to bloom, this tall and stately aloe promises more colour as winter progresses.
A Winter Feast for Birds, Bees, and Butterflies

Strelitzias are just one of the few flowers that bloom during the colder months.
The winter blooms at Renishaw Hills aren’t just beautiful to look at. Their nectar-rich flowers provide an important food source for birds, bees, and butterflies, bringing plenty of life to the gardens.
During this time of year, the coral trees also put on a spectacular display and attract a variety of bird species, including sunbirds.
Why Indigenous Gardens are Important for Property on the South Coast
Indigenous plants are naturally suited to the local climate and growing conditions, making them a practical choice for property on the South Coast.
They typically require less watering and maintenance once established, which makes them an eco-friendly choice. Additionally, indigenous plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife, supporting biodiversity and strengthening nearby ecosystems.
