Active ageing is a growing trend, whereby retirees prioritise their health through sports and recreational activities that keep them moving. On the KZN Mid-South Coast, walking is an increasingly popular group activity with retirees taking advantage of the region’s natural assets for physical fitness, mental clarity, and stress relief.
At the heart of this movement is the vibrant Renishaw Hills Walkers, a group from Scottburgh which has evolved organically over the past eight years. Today, there are four established walking groups, alongside numerous independent walkers, with close to 50 residents taking to the trails in any given week.
“We’ve seen a significant rise in walking groups among the retired community as it’s widely regarded as one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise – made even more beneficial when enjoyed with friends in natural surroundings,” says Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited.
