For those that might have missed it, one of Renishaw Hills’ very own has undertaken a great challenge. 89-year-old retired metallurgist Bill Wedderburn has beaten prostate cancer, chronic kidney disease, and even COVID-19. Now, he has his sights set on another goal… to walk 900km by the time he reaches his 90th birthday on 9 June next year. With an aim to raise funds and awareness for the Covid Healthcare Workers’ Family Fund, which supports the relatives of those who’ve died fighting the virus.
Bill has certainly inspired his fellow residents as well as those in the area. In honour of his commitment to this important cause, we thought we’d share four lessons that we can all learn from Bill.
1. To have a positive attitude
From prostate cancer to chronic kidney disease, and COVID-19, Bill has certainly found himself in the line of fire several times. Although Bill’s body has made it through these trying times, his mind had to be even stronger. This proves that your mindset is often half the battle won.2. That community is everything
At Renishaw Hills, we are big on community. We support and uplift each other when they need it most and even when they don’t, we remain dedicated and there for each other. Bill’s role within our community is one that inspires and encourages others to make a difference too.3. Kindness always comes back around
When Bill was ill, he experienced tremendous kindness from both healthcare workers and Renishaw Hills residents alike. It’s why he’s decided to pay it forward by creating the Covid Healthcare Workers’ Family Fund. This is proof that we should always be kind, you never know who needs it most. You also never know when it’ll come back to you.4. You’re never too old to set new goals
Even at the age of 89, Bill is showing us that the time is always right to dream a new dream. No matter what it is that you want for yourself, you’ve got everything you need within you to go out and get it.“There is a strong sense of community here at Renishaw Hills, and an incredible generosity of spirit that Bill so perfectly reflects. We’d like to take this moment to congratulate him, not only on his efforts for the deserving healthcare workers, but for also being such an inspiration to those around him. We are committed to supporting the cause and will contribute R10 for every kilometre Bill walks. We also encourage others to contribute by sharing stories of healthcare heroes and donating to our healthcare families who have paid with their lives while saving others.” – Phil Barker of Renishaw Property Developments
